Intriguing has a double meaning here I was drawn into the story and remained interested throughout the whole 616 pages as the narrator reveals how she became a spy during the Spanish Civil War and the run up to WW2 It wasn t until the Afterword that I realized many of the characters were real people which means I have some research to do I am curious about the fates of several of the ones I was most fascinated by This is also a story of a woman reinventing herself through necessity and coping with sudden shifts of fortuneI want to specifically praise the translator Daniel Hahn There were almost none of the slightly awkward phrases that make one realize the story was originally written in another language Thanks to his skill the book flowed smoothly Orthodontics of European expatriates trapped there by the worsening political situation back The Devil You Know on the Continent Sira reinvents herself by turning to the Employment Law one skill that can save her her gift for creating beautiful clothes Between love and duty As England Germany and the Asylum other great powers launch into the dire conflict Summit Lake of World War II Sira is persuaded to return to Madrid where she takes Public Display on a new identity to embark upon the most dangero.
