collected an interesting and thought provoking set of reflections here on what it means to preserve and conserve nature in the modern era The book contains an excellent set of thinkers speculating on case studies that cover a wide range of environmental issuesThe book does one thing exceptionally well it demonstrates that even among those who have very strong commitments to the environment there s massive disparities and disagreements in how nature ought to be seen and protected This is the defining feature of the volume for every point made in one essay there s a count point in anotherTake for instance the uestion of whether we ought to a get everyone to agree on a set of pro environmental values or b skip right over the agreement part and simply try to get everyone to find join actions they can all get behind The book never really solves this uestion instead drifting between the two positions and everything in between as it leaps from writer to writerIt s the challenge of an edited volume While Minteer and Pyne try to bring coherence through a provocative theme ultimately the volume feels disjointed It would benefit significantly from multiple interludes by the editors creating pauses to reflect on the varied opinions and to elucidate some of the interesting ways they talk to and past each otherThat said I think this is an effective book if you re familiar with the basic debates about the nature of nature and are looking for a good set of short provocative readings that explore the topic With the exception of McKibben s final coda a remarkably weak chapter to end the book on which entirely fails to bring any sort of synthesis to the robust conversations being had within and simply repeats drivel about solar I d say that each chapter is worth engaging with It could make an interesting compendium of pieces for an environmental philosophy class Medieval Islamic Philosophical Writings optimism to careful prudence to critical skepticism the resulting range The Grey After Preservation Summary ê eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF From John Muir to David Brower from the creation of Yellowstone National Park to the Endangered Species Act environmentalism in America has always had close to its core a preservationist ideal Generations have been inspired by its ethos to encircle nature with our protection to keep it apart pristine walled against the march of human development But we have to face the facts Accelerating climate change rapid urbanization agricultural and industrial devastation metastasizing fire regimes and other uickening anthropogenic forces all attest to the same truth the earth is now spinning through the age of humans After Preservation takes stock of the ways we have tried to both preserve and exploit nature to ask a direct but profound uestion what is the role of preservationism in an era of seemingly uns Should probably disclose I work with one of the editors which may skew this reviewAs with all essay collections some I liked than others I enjoyed the interdisciplinary thoughtfulness of F Stuart Chapins chapter Harry Greene s chapter also really stood out perhaps because I love the drama of the narrative he tells or because it led to some fascinating discussions and processing later Emma Marris had an exciting piece about expanding our concepts of nature and I think I ll carry those ideas and the discussions that came out of them with me for the rest of my career Lastly Michelle Marvier and Hazel Wong bring in a vital conversation that I hope to see the impacts of and as the conservation movement progresses Conservation for all everywhere with our own definitions and really despite a few authors thoughts I think that s great
