Free download L'Ascension du haut mal tome 6 David B raconte comment l'épilepsie appelée le Haut Mal au Moyen Âge de son frère aîné a bouleversé sa vie Tandis ue ses parents s'épuisent dans la uête d'une gu Epileptic David B was born Pierre Fran ois Beauchard in a small town near Orl ans France in 1959 He spent an idyllic early childhood playing with the neighborhood kids and along with his older brother Jean Christophe ganging up on his little sister Florence But their lives changed abruptly when Jean Christophe was struck with epilepsy at age eleven In search of a cure their parents dragged the family to acupuncturists and magnetic therapists to mediums and macrobiotic communes But every new cure ended in disappointment as Jean Christophe after brief periods of remission would only get worseAngry at his brother for abandoning him and at all the uacks who offered them false hope Pierre Fran ois David B learned to cope by drawing fantastically elaborate battle scenes creating images that provide a fascinating window into his interior life An honest and horrifying portrait of the disease and of the pain and fear it sowed in the family Epileptic is also a moving depiction of one family s intricate history Through flashbacks we are introduced to the stories of Pierre Fran ois s grandparents and we relive his grandfathers experiences in both World Wars We follow Pierre Fran ois through his childhood adolescence and adulthood all the while charting his complicated relationship with his brother and Jean Christophe s losing battle with epilepsy Excerpt from the description of the English omnibus edition Epileptic I m trying to imagine how persons with epilepsy would feel after reading this book Sad Angry Hurt Offended Anxious Terrified Probably they would have all those feelingsAnd that s understandable because this book has no happy ending In fact although David B tried to keep the tone light it s a sad and often devastating story David B was only 9 years old when he witnessed his older brother aged 11 having his first seizure while they were playing That was the beginning of a long and difficult fight against a disease that wasn t understood as it is now It were the seventies The family moved to a remote house because the neighbours in the village where they used to live reacted with mistrust irritation and hostility to Jean Christophe s seizures While the three children were used to play with friends on the streets daily they now became isolated surrounded only by trees and a gate that was kept closed La grande ronde des m decins a commenc pour mon fr re et mes parents The big round of doctors started for my brother and my parentsThat s only half the story David B and his younger sister Florence were also involved in this round of visits to doctors hospitals and alternative healers Medication didn t work On the contrary Jean Christophe s condition only worsened A specialist wanted to operate on Jean and remove a piece of his brain The parents refused there were too many risks They then turned to alternative healers uacks mediums and even an exorcist Not only Jean had to undergo all this the whole family did for support It s not surprising then that soon also the young children David B and Florence were fighting demons of their own While David had regular nightmares and lived in an imaginary nightmarish world of monsters and ghosts Florence struggled with depression And they were the healthy ones so they couldn t turn to anyone with their anxiety David was also convinced that he and his sister would get epilepsy and in his imaginary world he sought ways to fight this disease which he was unable to understand and which his brother was unable to overcome Jean Christophe had a severe form of epilepsy with up to three seizures daily He became dependent on his family especially on his mother and ended up in an institution for children with special needs No not a happy ending for this family The vast majority of the book is about David B s own experiences and struggles with his demons Unlike some other reviewers who thought he was self absorbed I find it uite normal that given his young age his experience was totally different than it would have been if he were an adult He was only about twenty years old when he began writing this graphic memoir He certainly wasn t always an understanding supportive and patient younger brother He missed his big brother and he was often angry and disappointed and anxious but above all I think he felt powerless as much as his brother did If he had told their personal story with consideration it would have been a lie There were some unrelated stories of his grandparents and parents past and background information on different alternative healing techniues which I didn t find particularly interesting Apart from that I really appreciated this honest and intense story of how this particular family dealt with a severely epileptic child and brother The evocative black and white illustrations considerably contributed to a better understanding of the complex feelings and emotions which words would fail to describe
