Eco is undoubtedly smart But that intelligence doesn t necessarily translate to humour And unfortunately Eco is really trying to be funny here And so unfortunately again most of these short pieces don t have appeal beyond the Oh I see what you re doing there moment Stories with all the subtlety of a political cartoonThere are a few kinds of pieces here Many are parodies They ask that you re familiar with the work they re talking about This means that if you haven t read or heard Diderot or Tasso or Manzoni or whole sections of this book have literally no appeal Which is the point of parody but still It would help if they were funnyThere are other types of stories that don t parody anything These rely on the cleverness and the fanciness of the prose to carry the story through rather than relying on an intrinsically interesting premise The only of this type that I like was Letter to my Son which hits a little close to home re current fascist insanity here in North America and which actually made me laugh a little Other ones are written in a tone that is heavily ironic and smug sounding or are otherwise unreadable Even as somebody who historically likes that type of writing it was tough to get through Worst was Euisse d un nouveau chat AvoidIn summary you have to be an Eco superfan to like this one and that s coming from somebody who gave five stars to The Name of the Rose earlier in 2017 Still it didn t take long to read so it s not like you ll be wasting too much time on it310

Some of these Misreadings were highly enjoyable with my favourites being Fragments Regretfully We Are Returning Your and The Discovery of America I found these in particular to be witty and to raise some interesting points for example in Fragments the misinterpretation of the significance by Prof Anouk Ooma of the so called uaternulus Pompeianus a booklet of song lyrics from a greatest hits album as an exuisite anthology of the most worthy poetic compositions of the period made me think about how some of our knowledge of the past must ultimately be based on albeit sensible guessworkDespite my enjoyment of these sections I found some of the other Misreadings reuired knowledge about the subject than I possessed which I was expecting given the nature of the book and as a result were dense and difficult to understand The low point for me was Industry and Sexual Repression in a Po Valley Society and I found myself glossing over parts of this just to get through itIn sum I couldn t bring myself to give this book fours stars because although the good bits were truly five star material there just weren t enough of them I would recommend parts of this book to someone unfamiliar with Umberto Eco s work as a good introduction to his humour and sheer interestingness
